Tatou

This
morning
on our
way
to
the
other
garden,
a man
called
me .

He asked
if I had
ever
seen
a
Tatou
before.
Thinking
that
he was
a hunter
who
had one
to sell,

I told
him
"yes",

he
asked,
"a live
one?"

I
have
only
seen
one
ready
for
the
pot.

A large
Tatou
can
fetch
$25 U.S.
and
is
a
delicacy.

She
was
being
looked
after
by
a
young
boy
and
was,
happily,
enjoying her own dinner.

  1. Thanks Darrel, I forgot to mention, if you want to know more, you can visit Armadillo Online in the links list.

  2. Oh, Armadillo! Looks like the nine-banded one (dasypus novencinctus), which I remember so well from my Texas garden. I lived once in the Texas Hill Country, also known as Texscany (from its slight resembrance of Tuscany) outside Austin. Behind my Texas-size ( fort those not familiar with things Texas = huge) house and yard, there was an untouched prerie - and Armadillos came from there to munch on the results of my gardening labor. :-)). According to neighbors I was supposed to be careful not to corner them, as they might attack...but never heard on anyone earing them... and in Texas I even tried rattlesnake in one country eatery (tastes like chicken - in casze you wonder)... but chicken fried steak was the most typical Texas fare.

  4. Tatou... Reminds of that guy off Fantasy Island who shouts: "The plane, the plane..."

So, Zooms, does it taste like chicken?

  6. Not really, it is more 'gamey', a very rich and sweet meat, more like pheasant than chicken. (You cook it with the shell on) I don't like to eat meat but will try anything someone cooks specially for me,....... except monkey.
