Sorrel, story and secrets.

This is West Indian sorrel
which we grow from seed.
Sorrel is the traditional
Christmas drink in the Caribbean.
It is refreshing and delicious,
it has healing properties
and is the perfect partner
when mixed with rum.

After harvesting the waxy
calyxes,

they are cleaned,
by removing the seed pod,
and washed,
before combining them with
'sugar and spice and all things nice.'

This website
www.meredithlaurence.com/?p=37
has more information and includes this delightful
Anansi story.

I like to put ginger in my sorrel,

and
other
secret
ingredients,
which,
if you are passing on Christmas day,
you will be very welcome
to
come
and
share.

  1. I wish I were passing on Christmas Day.
But then I would miss the snow...

  2. Hmm, this must be a different sorrel. I love sorrel soup - made from leaves. Love its slightly acidic taste, its intense green color with the contrasting slices of hard boiled eggs. But waxy callyxes? Used as a drink with rum? I hope I'd be passing one Christmas day - or so and taste this drink. :-)

  3. Yes indeed Minerva, Hibiscus sabdariffa, or West Indian sorrel ,is a different plant altogether, I expect it is available in Puerto Rico but you're
very welcome to come and try ours.

Cream, I could always make you a 'snow ice'.

  6. Hi AKR and Christine,
I'm glad both you like that photo, me too, it is in the kitchen on T's Grandpa's shelf. Sorrel tastes like cranberry juice.
